Experiential Learning!
Hands-on
learning is always the best learning experience for students. Many get a
chance to work and gain the experience at their graduation phase, while
very few students like Oakridgers get a unique chance to step into the board room at their school phase itself.
Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam has commenced the student internship for grade XI and XII this year; with students getting a chance to work at Tata Steel, Bhilai Steel Plant, ACC Cements, Aptech Computer Education, Bothra Shipping, HPCL, Siyarams Pvt Ltd and many more!

A Role Model who Inspires children
Having a role
model is healthy and helps serve as an inspiration to a child. Importance of
role models in your child’s life is that they can help your child aim high and
work to achieve goals. But it is important that your child choose a good role
model, a person who has overcome adversity in their own life and achieved
things. A role model does not have to be someone famous. It could be a Little
League Coach, a grandparent, teacher, or neighbour. Often a person who actually
interacts with a child makes a better role model than a sports or movie star. A
role model can have a positive impact upon a child's life in various ways.
When we are
growing up we look to our role models for inspiration and use this as a
blueprint for how we should behave when we’re older. This is likely a survival
function designed to help us to mimic the traits of those successful members of
our society and thereby help us to be successful too. At the same time in later
life its thought that our happiness is very much based on our perception of how
our life should or could be and the gap between that and how it is in reality.
In other words it’s striving for that same kind of success and achieving it
that brings us happiness or otherwise when we’re older.

What all makes
someone a role model? Is it only the characteristics they have or the behaviour
or their success? There are lot more things which make some one role model or
someone can be imitated.
Role models show
passion for their work and have the capacity to infect others with their
passion. Role models live their values in the world. Children admire people who
act in ways that support their beliefs. It helps them understand how
their own values are part of who they are and how they might seek fulfilling
roles as adults. Related to the idea that role models show a commitment to
their communities, students also admired people for their selflessness and
acceptance of others who were different from them. Young people develop the
skills and abilities of initiative when they learn to overcome obstacles.
Not surprisingly, they admire people who show them that success is
possible.
Children develop
as the result of many experiences and relationships. Role models play an
important role in inspiring kids to learn, overcome obstacles, and understand
that positive values can be lived each day. Whether you are a parent,
grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, civic leader, clergy member, sports coach,
after-school program leader, or a person who just happens into a child’s life,
you have the ability to inspire!

An Extra Effort for a Better Result
Life is about more than work. It is about family and community; it is about you, the individual. Helping your children lead truly balanced lives involves both modelling balance in your own life and helping them find balance in theirs. Extracurricular refers to things your children do outside of normal school classes. Adults also engage in extracurricular activities when they do things outside the normal duties of their job or profession. Extracurricular activities are important for all of us.
The major players in education industry are keen on providing an extra effort to boost up the co-curricular
activities of their students. Because it is an understood factor that co-curricular
activities help children to focus more widen their thinking and brain
development. Children who are involved in sports get higher school grades, have
an increased sense of self-worth, and are more likely to complete high school
than children who are not involved in sport. Children involved in sports are
also generally healthier due to their increased activity, and have stronger
social networks than children who do not participate in sport. Children
involved in music activities (such as learning a musical instrument) are often
better adjusted, with increased academic performance, ability to think
creatively, emotional understanding, and emotional expression. Children
involved in music typically have better memory skills than those who are not
musically trained.
The importance of extracurricular
activities at school is well established. The primary goals of extracurricular
activities focus on the individual student level, the institutional level, and
the broader community level. These activities exist to complement the school's
academic curriculum and to enhance the student's educational experience.
Research clearly shows that almost any type of student involvement in high
school and middle school positively affects student learning and development. Extracurricular
activities provide a setting to become involved and to interact with other
students, thus leading to increased learning and enhanced development.
Specifically, a student's peer group is the most important source of influence
on a student's academic and personal development. By identifying with a peer
group, that group may influence a student's cognitive development as well as
his or her behaviour. And the players in education sector puts all their effort
to make this possible.
Student involvement in
extracurricular activities also positively impacts educational attainment.
Research indicates that extracurricular involvement has a positive impact on
attaining a college degree and on educational aspirations. Students who are
actively engaged are more likely to have higher educational ambitions than
uninvolved students.

How to Improve Education Sector in India
India's constitution
stipulates the Universality of Elementary Education. In layman's terms, the
government is promising that all children between the ages of 6 and 14 will be
fully educated by a municipality. However, according to the World Bank, while
95% of Indian children attend primary school, only 40% go on to secondary
school. Many organizations offer solutions to improving primary education in
India.
But at the same
time we know we have good education system with 10+2 and college pattern. There
could be many factors which affect the education system in India to boom and
bane. If we take a closer look at things we can understand this with better
examples as well. Till now people were only discussing about the reasons. But
now we should be thinking and working to find some solution for betterment.
India must not
only improve its funding for primary education, it needs to insure that the
money is going where it’s meant to go. Many civic projects are left unfinished
because the funding ends up in the pockets of bureaucrats. This sum could
drastically improve primary education in India, but only if it ends up in the
right place.
For the
improvement of education sector in India high levels of enrollment look good on
paper, but improving the quality of education in rural areas is essential. The
education sector is also fraught with issues of quality, which leads to poor
learning outcomes, especially among children in primary school, who, without a
good foundation, continue to be at a disadvantage in later years. Change the
education system from the primary level (reduce work load, put more importance
on physical activities, encourage original thinking etc). There should not be
any form of evaluation (exam or so) till age 10 years. Teacher’s absences in
many of our schools in villages are another major reason which stands in front
of the education system. They find better opportunities and possibilities and
migrate to cities.
But as Gandhi said any development should
start from our villages, education should also get kick start from rural areas
for better tomorrow. Because education not only helps people to read and write
but it structures a generation for tomorrow. And we have an obligation to give
something back to our country which will have a long term impact on the whole
society. Improvement of education sector in India was the dream of our freedom
fighter and we should work to make the dream come true.

The Third Generation
Groucho Marx says “I find television very
educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and
read a book.” In 21st century’s context this statement is absolutely
perfect as the influence of visual media is on the peak. It has become a part
of life or may be more than that.
Education System in india |
The overflow of technology could be the main reason behind
it. And if the influence on elders is like this then there is a lot to worry
when it comes to children as they love to imitate us. As Newton said, “every
action has an equal and opposite reaction”, this social scenario also will have
reactions either positive or negative and in the curious case of media
influence there aroused certain negative reactions too. The distance between people
and books got increased. Though there are many digitalized books these days,
very few prefer them. These phenomenons will slowly leading to a generation who
does not have the strength of imagination and thinking as they are becoming
mere couch potatoes.
For our previous generation reading was a daily activity
which goes along with their routine. Their days were incomplete without a
newspaper. But situation and technology changed and accordingly habits also
changed as people started lacking time to sit at a place and spend some time
for reading. Especially when it comes to our young age group most of them
prefer social networking sites rather than a book. Should we let this happen or
try to bring in the old method will be based on the level of intellectual and
quality output given by each individual in various spheres. If the rating is
very low, there has to instant procedures to improve the situation.

Oakridgers Part of Global University League
Oakridge International School constantly seeks to provide our students with academic and career opportunities beyond the years that they study with us. Nowhere is this more evident than the emphasis and guidance we place on the university placement process.
As a college preparatory school, the future success of our students is of paramount importance, yet we also know that this success does not happen instantly. Therefore, preparing our students for the demands of university-level studies requires us to develop a rigorous academic environment, make their studies real-world relevant, and support and guide students in their chosen academic and career paths.

Encourage children to study through understanding their requirements
Remember the days when you used to sneak out of your class
behind your teacher’s back and constant shouting of your parents and even cane
beatings were not able to motivate you to study. Even though you learnt on your
own some time later, it was hard to keep yourself motivated when you were not
used to spend time studying. You don’t want your kids to have the same problems
which you had to suffer because of not studying from the childhood. However,
your kid doesn’t want to relent to studying. Kids are like that, they don’t
want to study, especially when they are small. However, motivating is important
to help them achieve success and confidence in their life.
Education System in india |
The first thing, which you have to do, is never to compare
your child to anyone. Every child is different and special and even if behind
your comparison lays the motive of encouragement to study, it is not right to
compare. Avoid comparing and use encouraging language for your kid. Tell them
motivating stories. Tell them why they should study and what will it do to
their future. Give your child a reason to work hard. Don’t bargain with your
child. Many people are in habit of telling their children that he/she would get
a bike if they get good marks etc. Even if it urges your child to study, it is
not the right way to motivate. They should know that they are studying for
themselves and not for anybody else. Schools, especially teachers need to take
care of these special needs of children.
Be patient and remember that they are kids and it will take
time for the idea to sink in. Reinforce the importance of studies in them and
be persistent. Keep in mind that even though you cannot insist your kid to
study, you can assist him/her. You need to use affirmative sentences in order
to let your kids understand the importance of studies. Don’t shout and yell or
even criticize your kid. It will only appall him/her from study. Studying
doesn’t just mean completing homework. So instead of allotting time for
completing the homework, allot time for studying.
Check your child's work. Every night is unnecessary, but
checks it often enough that he or she knows you might - and that you care.
Insist that sloppy or careless work be redone, but don't correct errors;
teachers need to know what students don't know. Give praise whenever possible
and appropriate. A sincere expression of pride in your child's academic
accomplishments can go a long way toward making studying a habit. If parents
and schools club to bring out these differences through various methods, then
study will be play area for children.

Why women should be educated?
Women are an integral part
of a family, a culture, a society and most importantly, a nation. In order for
a woman to excel in all these spheres, she needs to be backed by quality
education. This, sadly to say, in many countries, is not being carried out. Why
is this so, when so much emphasis on education is being placed nowadays? An
ancient Sanskrit saying says, woman is the home and the home is the basis of
society. It is as we build our homes that we can build our country. If the home
is inadequate, either inadequate in material goods and necessities or
inadequate in the sort of friendly, loving atmosphere that every child needs to
grow and develop then that country cannot have harmony and no country which
does not have harmony can grow in any direction at all.
That is why women's
education is almost more important than the education of boys and men. Gender inequality in education is
extreme. Girls are less likely to access school, to remain in school or to
achieve in education. Education helps men and women claim their rights and
realize their potential in the economic, political and social arenas. It is
also the single most powerful way to lift people out of poverty.schools plays a particularly
important role as a foundation for girls’ development towards adult life. It
should be an intrinsic part of any strategy to address the gender-based
discrimination against women and girls that remains prevalent in many
societies.
Everybody has the right to
education, which has been recognized since the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights (UDHR) in 1948. Cultural and traditional values stand between girls and
their prospects for education. One reason for denying girls and women their
right to an education is rarely articulated by those in charge: that is their
fear of the power that girls will have through education. Basic education
provides girls and women with an understanding of basic health, nutrition and
family planning, giving those choices and the power to decide over their own
lives and bodies. Women's education leads directly to better reproductive
health, improved family health, economic growth, for the family and for society,
as well as lower rates of child mortality and malnutrition. Therefore, we must
realize the value of women’s education and make efforts to bring about change
so that the whole country benefits.
